Therapy Services

Individual, Family, Integrated Care, & Group Therapy

Help for those with behavioral health challenges is available including individual, group, and family therapy.  We have clinicians which are office based, and housed in Primary Care offices.  Currently, our Integrated Care efforts for adults include Burke County DSS, Burke Primary Care, and Burke Integrated Health.

Substance Use Disorder Services

Individual and group therapy is designed to benefit those who have experienced behavioral health issues and substance use disorders. The program used is an outpatient, effective, evidence-based

practice, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy curriculum, designed to assist individuals in learning skills for managing recovery of both types of disorders, beahvioral health and substance use. This program provides education and information regarding symptoms and treatment options for various types of behavioral health concerns.  Individuals will learn skills for changing their thinking.  By using a central construct of Cognitive Restructuring, individuals engage in activities in which they learn skills for identifying thinking styles, feelings, recognizing automatic negative thoughts, and changing perceptions from negative to positive.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Group

DBT is therapy designed to help people change patterns of destructive behavior.  These patterns include self-harm, suicidal thinking, and substance use.  Increased emotional and cognitive regulation strategies are taught which, in turn, assist the individual with coping skills.  These skills along with positive reinforcement help the individual avoid undesired reactions and behaviors.


Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) Group

WRAP is a strengths-based approach to recovery.  Our group focuses on personal responsibility, hope, education, support, and self-advocacy.   Peer support and education are emphasized.  Individuals are encouraged to manage their recovery in a manner that is comfortable and within their means.

A Caring Alternative, Catawba Valley Behavioral Health, The Cognitive Connection, Community Care of NC, and High Country Community Health have come together to offer primary health care, specialty behavioral health care, and substance use care, all in one location that is coordinated and integrated. Psychiatric Care & Medication Management (Burke and McDowell counties)

Psychiatric care and medication management assessments are available for individuals dealing with behavioral health challenges stemming from symptoms caused by their behavioral health diagnosis.

Hospital Discharge Planning

Burke and Catawba counties


For children and adults who are discharging from an inpatient psychiatric facility, facility based crisis, or detox that need coordination of care and/or continued behavioral health services.

Support Services

Peer Support Services

Certified Peer Support Specialists are individuals with lived experience who now, through their own recovery, assist others with behavioral health and substance use disorders. Support is provided to individuals related to personal needs such as housing, food, healthcare and employment.

Individual Support Services

Individual Support (Personal Care) is a “hands-on” individualized assistance with everyday activities that are required by an individual with severe and persistent mental illness in order to live independently in the community. The service is to teach and assist individuals in carrying out daily living skills.  The goal is that the

need for this support will fade over time as the individual becomes capable of performing some of these activities more independently.

Tenancy Support Team

Burke and Catawba counties


Tenancy Support Team/Transitional Management is provided to individuals participating in the Transition to Community Living Initiative (TCLI).  TST focuses on increasing the individual’s ability to live as independently as possible, managing mental health symptoms, and re-establishing his or her community roles related to the following life domains:  emotional, social, safety, housing, medical and health, educational, vocational, and legal.

Community Support Team

The Community Support Team (CST) provides a comprehensive personalized treatment program for individuals with moderate behavioral health issues utilizing a team approach. The CST Team offers assistance in accessing resources, reducing psychiatric & addiction symptoms, and developing community living skills.

Assertive Engagement

Assertive Engagement (AE) is a community based resource to assist children, adolescents, and adults in accessing and navigating supportive services consistently. The goal is for individuals to receive timely outreach and engagement into the most appropriate treatment.

Critical Time Intervention

Burke and Catawba counties

Critical Time Intervention (CTI) services are time limited intensive case management services to assist individuals experiencing behavioral health issues during times of transitions.  Provided as a team approach, CTI helps to decrease homelessness, emergency department visits, crisis and psychiatric services.

Assertive Community
Treatment Team

The Assertive Community Treatment Team (ACTT) provides a comprehensive personalized treatment program for individuals with severe and persistent behavioral health illness. ACTT staff work with people in their home, at school, or at work, and are available 24/7. ACTT employs a team approach to help individuals with everyday basics such as taking medications and making it through the day. The team includes a psychiatrist, nurses, vocational specialists, therapists, other mental health professionals, and peer support staff to help people remain out of the hospital and living in the community.

Supported Employment

IPS (Individual Placement and Support) SE (Supported Employment) is an evidence-based approach to  supported employment for those with mental illness. IPS supports people in their efforts to achieve steady, meaningful employment in mainstream competitive jobs, either part-time or full-time.
